What Are Henna Brows?

I use Elleebana Brow Henna,  a natural alternative to tinting that is filled with anti-oxidants, a vitamin complex and hydrolysed proteins. This helps to strengthen and restore brow hair growth and improves the condition of the hair. Not only does the henna tint the brow hairs with a color that lasts 6 weeks - much longer than regular brow tint -  but it also serves as a kind of temporary tattoo, in that it stains the skin, lasting anywhere from 2 to 14 days.

**This cannot be used to tint eyelashes. This is a brow only product.

First, I will  prepare your skin and design the best shape for your natural brows and then will apply the henna. Henna takes longer to process than regular tinting - but it lasts longer. Like a "temporary tattoo," it dyes the skin safely, but due to variations in client skin type, exposure to UV rays, cleansing, and other factors, the skin tint lasts for 2 to 14 days. If you want a more permanent solution, read on for different tattoo options.

Henna has a drying effect on your skin, so if you already have very dry skin, it is not recommended. Also, it is not compatible with an existing tattoo, because it is a natural exfoliant. You can always experiment with a henna brow tattoo, wait a couple of months, and then get a real brow tattoo.

Please note that this product line does not include true black, because true black henna contains ingredients that are dangerous in pregnancy. I'll use a combination of henna colors to achieve the darkest effect that is safely possible on your skin.

What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a form of cosmetic tattoo in which the artist implants pigment using a manual tool similar in appearance to a watercolor paintbrush - except instead of a brush on the end, there is a very fine blade consisting of extremely fine, tiny needles. The artist  dips the blade into pigment and makes very fine, hairlike strokes that imitate real hairs. This service is perfect for almost anyone - female, male, or nonbinary - who wants to enhance, correct, or even create eyebrows. It is not appropriate by itself for individuals with oily skin or other conditions described below in the Machine Brow Services section.

Microblading is a permanent tattoo because we implant the pigment below the upper layers of the skin into the dermal layer. Microblading is a 2-step process: Immediately after the service, the new hairstrokes will look somewhat dark and thick, but they will fade quite a bit over the healing period of 4-8 weeks, when the client will need a touch-up service.  That's when any asymmetry, pigment issues, or mistakes are corrected and the look is filled out. The results will last between 6 months and 2 years, depending on multiple factors such as the client's skin type (the oilier the skin, the faster the strokes will not only fade, but blur), aftercare, and exposure to sun, beauty products and treatments, and chemicals like chlorine and saltwater.  Typically, clients still need to apply some brow makeup as the tattoo fades. And they'll need to maintain any hair removal outside the original design. In addition to the touch-up after the initial healing, a Color Boost is recommended once a year.  See videos of the microblading process by the PhiBrows Academy and check out my Portfolio for examples of all my work.

Microblading with Manual Shading: Microblading is a manual service, meaning no machine is used, just a handheld tool. You can add more fullness and dimension by adding on Manual Shading. That won't last any longer than the microblading, but it gives a nice, complete look on as permanent a basis as microblading.

For clients with oily skin, very sparse brows, large pores, deep wrinkles, thyroid issues, and/or thicker brow and forehead skin or those wanting an ombré or powdered look, book a Machine Brow Service.  See What Are Machine Brow Services? below. Note: If you have very sparse or no brows at all, microblading may still work fine for you, as long as you have otherwise normal skin.

What Are Machine Brow Services?

Every service begins with a consultation, but if your skin is not appropriate for the service you have selected, I may have to change what you've requested. This is why it is so important that you follow the instructions on How to Book and fill out the Confidential Medical Intake form (see Policies & Forms) honestly and thoroughly. I perform multiple types of machine brow services, all of which are appropriate for any skin type, yet the only services appropriate for skin with the characteristics listed below. Once you finalize the How to Book process, I can advise you better. If you have very sparse or no brows, you still can have microblading, with or without shading. Or, book a separate consultation service (*Note: Separate consultations are charged a minimum of $100, and this amount is not applied toward any service.) FEEL FREE TO TEXT ME WITH QUESTIONS before booking: 503-706-8641. I can be reached via WhatsApp, Viber, and SMS.

Skin & Medical Conditions Requiring Machine, Not Manual Microblading or Shading:

  • very sparse brows: I can make very sparse brows look very full with manual microblading + manual shading, but your skin must not have any of the characteristics listed in this section. And you still might prefer a machine service regardless

  • some kinds of oily skin: Please conduct Skin Type Tissue Test

  • large pores, thick skin, and/or deep wrinkles: common in clients 40 years old or above, but not everyone, and still possible on younger skin. Does your forehead skin resemble an orange peel, apple peel, grape peel, or hard-boiled egg (without the shell)? If your answer is orange peel or hard-boiled egg, you may need machine brow services, not microblading.

  • medical conditions and medications: Some medical conditions tax the immune system more than others or just in general create problems with retention. For example, clients with thyroid issues may need to be touched up more frequently or or might not be eligible at all.  If you are on blood thinners, microblading isn't appropriate, and I may still require a doctor's release. You must be off Accutane for at least 6 months. These are just a few examples. Please fill out the Intake Form honestly and accurately. It's important to understand that your immune system is involved with tattoo healing, and if it's busy performing some life-saving task, skip the tattoo. Check with me ahead of time if you're not sure.  FEEL FREE TO TEXT ME WITH QUESTIONS before booking: 503-706-8641. I can be reached via WhatsApp, Viber, and SMS.

Machine Brow Services Offered:

  • Blade & Shade: With this service, I fully microblade your entire brow and then add a machine powder  effect with a lighter pigment in the fullest part of the brow and lighter still  in the rest of the brow. As the microblading fades, you will still have a powder effect on your brows.  You may also have heard of this as "microshading." Because regular manual microblading is done, this procedure is best for those with normal skin to mildly oily.

  • Ombré Brow, Regular: This is a very specific design, that many people understand as "Instagram Brows." The brow is sharply defined, with a tight point at the tail, becoming lighter and lighter toward the head.  I am certified in this technique by Linnie Pham. Great for all skin types.

  • Ombré Brow, with Microbladed Headstrokes:  This is the same as the ombré brows described above, but I can add microbladed hairstrokes in the head area of the brow. This works best if the client already has a medium to heavy amount of natural brow hairs and normal (not oily) skin. This has also been referred to as "microshading," but it is quite different from the Blade & Shade.

  • Regular Powder Brow: This brow is a fully pigmented brow, with or without any sharp edges, points, or arches. Of course, the brow will be shaped appropriately, so you'll still have an arch and tail, but if you prefer a more rounded, less dramatic look, have little or no brow hair but want the look of having brow powder on all the time, this is for you. Fine for all skin types.

  • Soft Powder Brow/ Magic Brow: This is similar to the Regular Powder Brow, but assumes you have moderate to full existing brow hair. I apply the tattoo using a soft pixelating effect, so it looks like your natural brows have powder makeup on all the time. If you have normal (not oily) skin, microblading may still be your preference, but otherwise, this works for any skin type. I studied with international Grand Master Paola Soto, who mastered this form from Sviatoslav Otchenav, founder of AcademyS

Microblading & Machine Brow Services
Q & A

Q.   Does it hurt?

Everyone's pain threshold is different, so it's impossible to predict how you might respond. It's important to remember that microblading, manual shading & machine brow services are all forms of tattoo, so some discomfort should be expected. To help minimize the pain, I apply three different anesthetics.  After you approve the final penciled design, I apply the first anesthetic and cover it with plastic wrap, a technique called "occlusion." This helps the anesthetic penetrate the skin, although not necessarily as much as after the skin is broken. I then let it sit while we choose your color and go over your aftercare instructions. I will continue to apply anesthetic throughout the procedure. Please note that natural redheads are difficult to anesthetize, so please let me know ahead of time, since your appointment may take longer. Also, if you are on your period (or, for some women, ovulating) at the time of your appointment, you may be more sensitive. This is not cause for rescheduling; just let me know so I can serve you better.

Q.   Who is a candidate for microblading or machine brows?

Most people are microblading and machine brow candidates:

  • Men, women, and nonbinary individuals over 18 years of age

  • Anyone wanting fuller, better shaped eyebrows

  • People with alopecia (no or almost no brows)

  • Individuals who have lost their eyebrow hair through chemotherapy (you must be six months out from your last treatment)

  • Clients with prior eyebrow tattoos, including microblading or manual/machine shading at least 4 weeks old

  • Anyone not wanting to apply brow makeup

    • Please note the differences between requirements and exclusions for microblading and machine brows, above

Q.   Who isn't a candidate for microblading or machine brow service?

The following individuals cannot be microbladed or worked on by machine:

  • Anyone under 18 years of age without a doctor's prescription - even with a parent's permission

  • Anyone under the influence of alcohol or mind-altering drugs at the time of the procedure

  • Anyone with a compromised immune system, which includes individuals with HIV/AIDS, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.

  • Anyone prone to keloid scars (scars that tend to be thick and raised; more common in darker skin types)

  • Pregnant women (physician's permission required for nursing women)

  • Hemophiliacs

  • Individuals with multiple sclerosis if using an immunosuppressant

  • Epileptics, whether under control or not

  • Clients on blood thinners (okay in some instances with physician's permission)

  • Clients on steroids like prednisone (okay in some instances with physician's permission)

  • Clients with diabetes or thyroid problems may need more time to heal, may require more frequent touch-ups and may require a physician's release

  • Clients with active psoriasis or eczema, particularly on your face (physician's permission required)

  • Anyone with the following conditions are better candidates for machine brows:

    • oily or very dry skin

    • red, itchy, bumpy, scaly skin

    • skin with large pores or deep wrinkles

  • See How to Book, below. FEEL FREE TO TEXT ME WITH QUESTIONS before booking: 503-706-8641. I can be reached via WhatsApp, Viber, and SMS.

    • I still may require an in-studio consultation, the cost of which is not applied to any service you may get.

Please note: any client who has any of the above conditions and makes an appointment without consulting with me ahead of time will be charged the full service amount, even if I am unable to safely and carefully carry out the service.

 Q.   How do I take care of my brows after microblading or machine shading?

You should read and print out the the aftercare instructions (see Policies & Forms) at least a week ahead of time; bring both your intake and your aftercare forms with you, and we will go over them during your appointment. You'll be given a printed copy to take home. It's critical that you follow the instructions provided at your appointment, because failure to do so can lead to premature fading or, worse, infection or scarring.

Q.   How will my brows look & feel immediately after the appointment? Can I resume normal activities right after?

Because the pigment has mixed with your blood and lymphatic fluid and exposed to oxygen, the effect will be quite dark and thick for the first couple of days, gradually fading, with swelling decreasing over the next couple of weeks. The brow area will be red and a little swollen, and there may be blanching from the anesthetic. These effects will disappear within a day. But the tattooed area should be considered a wound, so it will be tender for a day or two. The immediate look and feel doesn't interfere with returning to work or most activities. However, you will be instructed to begin your aftercare 30 minutes after your procedure and will need to clean your brows frequently during the first day. In addition, it is imperative that you protect your new brows from the sun, so you'll need to wear a hat when you leave my studio; also, you must refrain from any activities that could make you sweat, including but not limited to exercise or exposure to heat. All of this is detailed in your aftercare instructions.

Q.   Will I be able to cover any scabbing or other healing side effects with makeup?

You will not be able to put anything on your new brows other than as instructed in your aftercare instructions.  That said, my clients do not scab; instead, there will be light peeling beginning after 3-4 days. During the first week, the only things you'll be able to put on them will be cleanser and aftercare ointment as instructed. After the first week, you must put sunscreen on them every day. After two weeks, you can put makeup on them if desired. You shouldn't experience any scabbing, but if you do, it's essential that you do not pick at the scabs. You may experience itching during the first 10 days or so of healing, but it's crucial that you don't scratch them; the ointment provided in your care kit will help.

Q.   When should I schedule the touch-up session?

It's important to know that microblading, with or without machine shading, is, like all cosmetic tattoo, a two-step process. There may be asymmetries or other problems that become apparent only after the first session. First, the client must wait for the swelling to subside, the work to fade from its initial intense color, and healing to complete. Only then can we determine what needs to be done to correct and finalize the look, and that is done at touch-up. We will schedule your touch-up at the end of your first session. You will return no sooner than 4 weeks and no later than 8 weeks. If later than 8 weeks, you'll need to schedule a Color Boost appointment.

Q.   Are there things I need to do or to not do before and after my appointment?

Yes, to safeguard against problems with the procedure, infection, or premature fading, there are important things you need to do both before and after your treatment. These are indicated below, in the Before Your Service and Important Booking Info sections, and also in the aftercare instructions and intake form (see Policies and Forms).

Q.   Is the work guaranteed?

While I can guarantee that I am properly licensed and certified and that I use sterile equipment and appropriate, safe pigments, the work itself is not guaranteed. This is because all tattoo work is an art, not a science, and because there are so many variations in client skin, history, and aftercare. That said, you may feel that there are asymmetries or other errors after your first session.  It's important to remember that all cosmetic tattoo is a two-step process and clients are advised to wait until the initial work heals and settles; I will do my best to correct any issues at your touch-up appointment. Please note that I do hold an A+ accreditation with the Better Business Bureau, a recognition reserved only for invitees who respond to a thorough interview process. Learn more about my credentials by visiting the About Martha page.

Before Your Service

Read through this information as well as the aftercare instructions carefully so that you know when to schedule your treatment before or after various activities (parties and other events, vacations, anti-aging treatments, etc.). Failure to observe these requirements can make the appointment difficult (for instance, excess bleeding) or interfere with healing.

In general, for all cosmetic tattoo, you will need to limit exposure to UV rays (daylight and tanning beds), heat (so you don't sweat; this includes working out and being in a warm climate), and chlorine and salt water (e.g., pools and the ocean; you'll also need to avoid fresh water like rivers and lakes for up to two months). You also will need to commit to frequent aftercare during the first 24 hours. For these reasons, book your appointment accordingly, not immediately prior to a summer vacation, exotic getaway, or special event; plan your tattoo session at least 3 months prior.

24 Hours Prior:

  • No working out or other activities that heats the body (this can cause your pores to expand; sweat brings salts to the surface, which interferes with pigments)

  • For eyebrow and eyeliner procedures, please do not wear any makeup above your cheekbones at the time of your appointments

  • For eyeliner procedures, do not use an eyelash curler 24 hours prior

  • For lip tattoo procedures, begin prescription medications (Acyclovir, Prednisone) as directed by your physician (see intake & aftercare forms for lips)

****Do not discontinue any medications without the approval of your physician****

48 Hours Prior

  • No caffeine, which includes not just coffee, but energy drinks like Red Bull, cola, and even certain root beers (caffeine is a blood thinner and can cause you to bleed & bruise more during the treatment; try to avoid for 48 hours prior - and definitely for 24 hours)

72 Hours Prior:

  • Please exfoliate the treatment area thoroughly but gently with a dry washcloth

Less than 72 Hours Prior:

  • For brow & lip tattoos, no waxing, tweezing, threading, sugaring, or tinting (so skin isn't irritated)

  • No exposure to sun (so skin isn't burned or even slightly tanned)

  • Do not perm or tint your eyelashes for 72 hours prior to eyeliner procedures

1 Week Prior:

  • No alcohol (a blood thinner that can cause you to bleed & bruise more easily)

  • No aspirin, ibuprofen, or Aleve (all blood thinners, which may cause you to bleed and bruise more during & after the procedure; Tylenol/acetominophen is okay)

  • No Vitamins A or E, niacin, or fish oil (all blood thinners, which may cause you to bleed and bruise more during & after the procedure)

  • For eyeliner procedures, please have any eyelash extensions removed a week prior to your service

****Do not discontinue any medications without the approval of your physician****

Less than 1 Month Prior:

  • No chemical peels

  • No Retin-A

  • No dermaplaning or microneedling

  • No laser hair removal

  • No botox, fillers, or other injectables (3 months at least after lip filler before lip tattoo)

Less than 2-3 Months Prior (for Eyeliner & Eyelash Enhancement Tattoo):

  • No eye or eyelid surgery, including cataract, Lasik, and blepharoplasty procedures

  • Please consult with your physician to ensure how long you should wait after a surgical procedure before eyeliner tattoo

Less than 3 (preferably 6-12) Months Prior (for Lip Tattoo)

  • No lip filler of any kind prior to a lip tattoo procedure less than 3 months prior, preferably longer; your lips would swell otherwise at least four-fold

At least 6 months before:

  • No chemotherapy or radiation treatment

  • No Accutane

HOW TO BOOK

  • Before you book a service, you must fill out the confidential medical intake form (see Policies & Forms) and send me three photos of your brows (see below)

    • Fill out the medical intake form for the service you are requesting.

      • If you have access to a smart phone or computer, please use the computer for the form that you can fill out online. Chrome & Firefox browsers work best.

      • If you do not have a computer or smart phone please fill out the printable version, take a clear photo of Pages 1-4 and send them to me in a text message via WhatsApp, Viber, or SMS to 503-706-8641. Clients without access to a computer, smart phone, or printer, will need to complete these steps at a Kinko's.

        • You can also email the form to me at Martha@Q7.com, but please send me a text message to let me know you've done so. I do not check my email every day.

    • Include full details regarding any medical conditions and medication. For example, you might say "I was treated for breast cancer but it's been 6 months since I finished chemo. I am now taking Tamoxifen for hormone suppressant therapy."  I will ask you further questions if necessary.

    • Also send me the following photos:

      • Please have someone take three well-focused photos of you in good lighting. Selfies generally do not provide enough detail. Here is what I need (see examples, below):

      • a photo of your face from the front

      • a photo of each brow from the side

      • make sure you have no makeup on

      • the best time to take these photos is in the morning

        • first, wash your face, but apply no product whatsoever

        • wait about an hour before taking the photos

        • also, perform this skin-type test to determine if you have oily, dry, normal, or combination skin; include that info on the medical intake form where indicated.

      • I really want an accurate representation of your skin, including how large your pores or any wrinkles are, how oily or dry your skin is, your natural skin color (from very light to very dark), and your skin tone (cool, warm, neutral).  And, of course, I want to see your natural brows. If you have preexisting brow tattoo, that's fine. Be sure to tell me in case it isn't obvious from the photos. It's important to know that I can't tattoo over pre-existing tattoo in every case.

      • Send these to me in a text message via WhatsApp, Viber, or SMS to 503-706-8641 or email them to me at Martha@Q7.com, but please send me a text to let me know you've done so, since I don't check my email every day.

  • A credit card is required to book

  • A nonrefundable deposit will be charged against your card upon acceptance of your appointment request; you will be charged the balance at your appointment. The deposit amount ranges from $25 to $150, depending on the service selected

  • Please read the Before Your Service information to ensure a safe service

  • Print and fill out the intake form and the aftercare instructions and bring both with you to the appointment

    • Your appointment may be cancelled and you may be charged the full amount for the service if you are more than 15 minutes late. Please text me at 503-706-8641 if you are running late.

    • PARKING:

      • Allow at least half an hour to find parking for longer services, especially if you have an SUV - or take transit or Lyft or similar service

        • Unfortunately, parking in the Pearl District is becoming more and more difficult to find, particularly because, due to all of the ongoing construction, construction workers' vehicles are taking up more and more spaces

        • Thus, I strongly recommend using Lyft or a similar service if at all possible.

        • Two streetcar lines (the A & NS northbound) run directly in front of Sola, stopping at 10th & Glisan, across the street; the B & NS southbound stop just one block away, on 11th & Glisan)

      • There is on-street 2-hour metered parking for shorter services like consultations and lash lift & tint

      • Longer term parking is unavailable at metered street locations, and you will not be able to leave during the service to feed the meter; you are best off parking in a lot or structure

      • Clients with SUVs may have difficulty parking in a surface lot, so look for a structure instead

        • Parking structures or lots may be found at:

        • 955 NW Hoyt St., Portland, OR 97209 next door to Sola (warning: this surface lot is usually full, so please plan on searching elsewhere)

        • 475 NW 9th Ave, Portland, OR 97209 (surface lot at NW Glisan & Park)

        • 455 NW 12th Ave, Portland, OR 97209 (surface lot at NW 12th, bet. Flanders & Glisan)

        • 690 NW 6th Ave., Portland, OR 97209 (surface lot at NW 6th & Irving)

FOR ANY SKIN TYPE! This is a very specific design, that many people understand as "Instagram Brows." I am certified in this technique by Linnie herself. You'll be charged a nonrefundable $100 deposit upon booking. Touch-up is added later, booked at initial appt & requires a small deposit. 48 hrs notice to cancel/change. FOR ANY NORMAL TO MILDLY OIL SKIN TYPE AND EXISTING BROW HAIR! This is a very specific design, that many people understand as "Instagram Brows." The brow is sharply defined, with a tight point at the tail, becoming lighter and lighter toward the head. I add microbladed strokes at the head to integrate with the client's natural brow hairs. I am certified in this technique by Linnie Pham. You'll be charged a nonrefundable $100 deposit upon booking. Touch-up is added later, booked at initial appt & requires a small deposit. 48 hrs notice to cancel/change. No shows/same day cancels, 15+ min late, or not prepared are charged full price. Please be sure to print & fill out the Intake & Aftercare forms (see Policies & Forms on the menu bar).

FOR ANY SKIN TYPE! This uses the same basic technique as the ombré brows that many people understand as "Instagram Brows," but the head of the brow is not lighter than the rest of the brow. The brow can be sharply defined, with a tight point at the tail, or it can be more rounded; the design will ultimately depend on your face shape and preference.

$550+

FOR ANY SKIN TYPE! For this technique, I use a special needle cartridge to create a brow that looks like you have brow powder on. You should have enough of your own brow hairs to look complete, but not very full hair for this particular technique.  I'll design the best brow shape for your face. This procedure results in a more pixelated effect, versus the Regular Powder Brows, which are more saturated. The top and head of the brow is lighter, giving it an ombré effect.

Consultation

A nonrefundable $100 fee for up to a 1-hour consult; $25/ea additional 15 min.

After reading through all the information throughout this website, you might still want a 1-on-1 consult for any of the following:

  • because you have an existing tattoo you'd like corrected (consultation is required in this case)

  • to clear up any questions or concerns

  • to help choose between service offerings (for example, microblading versus machine brows)

  • to make sure you are a good candidate (due to illnesses or other conditions)

But keep in mind that you may not need a consultation (except in the case of previous tattoo correction)! When it comes to determining your tattoo shape or color, that's all part of the initial service and is included in the service price.  And you can always feel free to contact me via text to see if a consultation is really worth it or necessary in your case, at 503-707-8641. Please noteShould the consult result in no further service being scheduled for any reason, the consult deposit remains nonrefundable. Separate nonrefundable deposits will be taken for any services scheduled.

$100+

A $100 Consultation is required first. Then, a nonrefundable $150 deposit is applied toward the corrective service; initial service starts at $600, with a touch-up of at least $150.

Unhappy with a microblading, machine, and/or shading service you received elsewhere? Understandable -- but corrective work can be tricky, with potentially suboptimal results. I am still willing to help you, with the following conditions:

  • you must schedule a consultation service, which has a $100 nonrefundable deposit, payable upon booking the consultation

  • if I agree to do corrective work, please understand that:

    • you are still responsible for all fees associated with the new service

    • the service may take longer than normal as I try to achieve an optimal shape; this means there may be additional charges

    • I may not be able to microblade at all, although if I am, my goal will be to microblade in between your original strokes, I offer no guarantee that I won't go over a previous stroke, which increases the chance of scarring or wider hairstrokes

    • any new shaping I do will be constrained by your original shape; I can usually correct asymmetry, but not problems with the original tattoo being too thick, too high or low, heads too close in, or tails too long or droopy

    • I cannot correct color problems with previous microblading, although I can do color correction with machine shading. Microblading may not be your best choice.
